Mulkerns SPAR & EUROSPAR Helping to create ‘Happy Homes’ during Covid Crisis

Mulkerns EUROSPAR Newry and Mulkerns SPAR Jonesborough ran a “lockdown” Colouring Competition called ‘Happy Homes’ to raise money for children in our community who were most at risk from the negative effects of lockdown.  Mulkerns invited local children to help create ‘Happy Homes’ by submitting their colouring creations online and Mulkerns donated £1 for every entry submitted to Barnardos NI and Armagh Down Women’s Aid.  The competition recently drew to a close and an amazing £2000 was raised for these local charities.  The winners of the colouring competition were Colleen McKeown Aged 3, Daithi, Aged 11 and Shane McGlade Aged 10.

The colourful creations were displayed on Mulkerns Community events notice board which when all community events were cancelled, had suddenly become bare overnight.  The new colourful display gave queueing customers something bright to focus on as they waited patiently in line, and helped to create awareness of the needs of these local charities.

Terry Mulkerns commented “We became aware from the outset of lockdown that many families found themselves trapped in very unstable and even dangerous circumstances in their own homes. We really wanted to do something to help these families, while also generating awareness among those more fortunate families. We contacted our local Women’s Aid and Barnardo’s and they were very grateful to be the beneficiaries of this initiative, reiterating the problems that current circumstances are causing them. We were delighted to be able to help in our own small way by raising awareness and giving this cash donation.”
